New agent Build & Plan modes

They’re busy. Get ready for some amazing launches this month!

Agent is just hallucinating. I haven’t seen any costs or changes from Plan mode, so I’m only going on what I see.

I agree that the planning chats do have costs that need to be recouped somehow. I don’t know in what manner - just rolled up and billed in the next build phase, or does the cost of a build token go up to cover the costs of planning. Somehow Replit needs to cover the costs.

planning phase chats are tracked and added to your next build with agent.

Do you have confirmation of that from Replit?

If you think about it from the perspective of incentives, Replit should want its users to plan first and then build. If they reduce the cost (to users) of planning to zero then more people will plan thoroughly before building. This will result in better outcomes for everyone. The last thing Replit wants is to have poorly constructed apps and unhappy users even if it means a bump in revenue. By definition the AI cost of planning will get absorbed somewhere else but with multiple models available to the user, we can all make the cost - value tradeoff ourselves.

I sort of see your point, but not sure I agree.

Tweak the product so we lose money on every prompt and encourage good planning so users do fewer prompts” is not a phrase I imagine Replit, Lovable, or others will ever speak.

The revenues to be made by them all as their user burn through credits each time the agents do something wrong is MONSTEROUSLY AND MASSIVELY HUGE!

These are businesses that are aiming for world domination - the entire software industry re-factored to use AI platforms is a trillion dollar game. The winners won’t be the ones who are nice and give freebies to their users.

If it was me, I’d be making a profit every time any of you even think of writing a prompt: a pre-thought charging model

Admittedly @Gipity-Steve I’m suppressing my more cynical side when considering their motives so I do understand your perspective. At the same time, Replit doesn’t hold a competitive advantage with the model cost and they have no control over that pricing. So if they’re going to dominate this space it has to come from delivering efficiently coded and deployed apps from their platform. They are looking at lifetime value of the user, not one time charges from the prompt (although that’s how it looks to us). If you learn how to productively code apps on Replit, you’re not switching to Lovable. I’m sure they’re recouping the planning costs in whole or in part somewhere else with premium pricing on the more powerful models. But I’m ok with that since, as you and others have pointed out, the cost of building an app on Replit is still a fraction of the cost of hiring coders.

Where did you see/confirm this?

Minority Extort?

I’m going to get some clarity on this and report back.

Yeah I have no idea to be honest. It is a fascinating game which I’ve seen played out a few times since I ventured into this crazy startup world at the end of the 90s. Each time I am surprised by how everyone plays it - and we didn’t even have Elon Musk back then to shake it up.

So no one knows how it ends, although I am certain Lovable and Replit are just the warmup acts.

Sit back with some popcorn and enjoy the show

Official response: Planning is not free. More details coming.

It appears Plan mode costs as much as any other code changing prompt.

You should now see the costs after every Plan run. Test for yourself.

Don’t :water_pistol: the messenger!

Yep, all makes sense if you ask me.

275 lines of code and your prompt passed to Claude, plus its response - that’s a fair few tokens used up.

No way Replit are gonna pay for those - although I do appreciate @anilmalhotra2’s thoughts on the competitive landscape and bigger picture.
