I’m building an online app, a full-stack B2B marketplace on Replit. Most of the application is implemented, and I’m working to finish an agreement workflow that includes Admin-authored terms, saving, versioning, read-back, and Preview.
I’m looking for advice from experienced Replit developers who have successfully built and validated database-backed applications with Replit Agent.
The challenge
We’ve implemented the API and UI for saving two profile agreement terms. The API uses PostgreSQL through a shared database module, with its connection pool constructed from the inherited DATABASE_URL environment variable.
Our Development Database is visible in the Replit Database pane, but DATABASE_URL is not listed in the ordinary Secrets pane. We understand that this alone doesn’t establish which database the API actually uses.
We have deliberately avoided starting the application just to trigger diagnostics because the normal startup path can also perform other operations, including taxonomy updates and background workers. We want to understand the effective database target and testing implications before taking that step.
Meanwhile, source-level work and isolated regression tests have progressed, including a recent correction to a JSON request-size limit. However, we have not yet completed a live acceptance test proving that saved content survives an independent server read-back and reopening the editor.
My questions
-
Database binding: What is the recommended way to verify that a Replit-hosted API is using the intended Development database when the connection comes from a platform-managed environment variable?
-
Safe testing: How do experienced Replit developers validate database-backed functionality when application startup performs additional operations that may have side effects?
-
Agent workflow: Is there a more effective way to have Replit Agent complete and validate this type of existing workflow, rather than continuing through increasingly narrow implementation and diagnostic tasks?
-
Alternative approach: If you encountered this situation, would you keep the existing architecture and establish a safe test path, or simplify the development setup in some other way?
The outcome I’m trying to achieve
I want to complete one controlled acceptance test:
Save → independent server read-back → close/reopen → Preview
I’m not looking to rebuild the application or bypass authorization, versioning, audit, or lifecycle controls. I’m looking for the most direct, reliable way to finish and validate what is already implemented.
I’d especially appreciate advice from anyone who has solved a similar Replit Development database or Agent testing challenge. Specific, practical steps would be much more helpful than general advice to check the database settings.
Thank you!
