Plan Mode is 3 months old: Requesting honest reviews & tips

Hey all,

I’ve been using Plan Mode since it dropped back in September 2025, now I’m wondering if it has been helping or hurting.

  • Is It Redundant: To a degree, it’s nice to think through something before going, but wouldn’t Build Mode take more or less the same steps (depending on autonomy level)?
    • I suppose it does allow you to see how the agent is thinking through a solution, and if you understand enough, you can provide feedback.
  • Arbitrary Code: It isn’t clear how Plan Mode is billing me. Sure, it’s typically under $2, but it isn’t clear if it’s how long it works on something or how much code it has to review, or something else (forgive the ignorance on this one).
  • Does it Save Time? I’m honestly curious how others have been doing and if you have any tips or tricks in Plan Mode.

I think this thread would help the masses

Ooooh Nooooooooooooooooooo! Do not even hint at removing plan mode!!

Planning an app is mission critical. Never just dive in and tell your developer to start hacking code without planning first. That way lies madness my friend!

I suppose I do my planning outside of Replit, so usually I’m just piecemealing my epics over to the agent for implementation.

Agree with Steve here. I’m a religious user of Plan mode. It’s absolutely not redundant.

Remember, plan mode isn’t just for “planning”. It is for debugging and testing:

Saying to agent things like: “X has gone wrong, I need you to analyse the console errors and the codebase and give me a plan to fix it”.

And then going back and forth a few times, questionning the plan before you agree to switch to build mode.

i agree, plan mode is nice as it is good to settle on your desired UI/UX before generating the backend.

and correct me if i’m wrong but you can always see the cost if you expand the “worked for X seconds” widget.
